IT'S LAUGHABLE
What actually happened?
Apprenticeship to Love: The crooked path of sacred marriage (August 6, 2026)
TODAY'S QUESTION
Where am I taking myself seriously? Where am I most laughable?
TODAY’S MEDITATION
Without my attention to depth, where is my beloved's heart? Can it ever be safe, if I am not attending to the depth of who I am as the one who loves, who says he loves?
Knowing the answer I'm tempted to get all hard-core on myself. But... as a teacher once said, approximately, Life is an entertainment. Get some popcorn. Pull up a chair. Enjoy!
...
So, was it a fall from grace, this recent slip? Perhaps.
I've certainly felt myself to be in a state of grace, recently.
But then, a moment of taking things —a state of grace, for instance— for granted. Courting a familiar form of self-destruction: taking myself seriously, too seriously. It's laughable, really. But only laughable because, in this instance, I didn’t drag anyone down into the drama.
Still, I’ve slipped. Slipped from that effortless effort of holding and breathing into whatever depth I held. Now, from deep I’m in the shallows.
Laugh about it! Yes!
Breathe and laugh and become still. Become amused at myself, my habits. Bad habits, and good habits…
...
The yoga I practice is known as the "yoga of awareness." It's one of the best things about this practice: the experience becoming aware. It can be "too much," if I get serious about it. It's laughable when I take myself unseriously. I am, after all, a fool. With every moment, willfully stepping off the cliff of certainty into the unknown of life and love and all the beautiful and unpredictable things life and love and breathing bring to me.
So, let me fall —and let me laugh!
...
What actually happened?
A kind of perfect storm for this man, this fool:
- a writing project way beyond my experience;
- her deafening silence and insurmountable distance;
- my lack of self-discipline when it comes to practice.
- Result: a nervous system crying out for... for rescuing! For all sorts of (bad) habitual responses. Drama! Anguish! Self absorbtion! Etcetera etcetera etcetera.
Boringly familiar. Painfully familiar (Hey! I thought I'd done with this sht!*)
Fortunately, no humans or dogs or other beings were hurt in this episode.
But... my attention and my presence suffered so, somewhere and somehow (because I'm trusting this) the woman I love knew my inattention, my lack of depth. She felt me swimming in the swampy shallows of old habits. I flooded myself with feelings of ugliness, uworthiness, etcetera etcetera etcetera... all of it familiar.
A moment now, to have compassion for myself. And to remember: becoming "aware" is not the same as "doing right." That too requires practice, patience, and perseverance.
So, today: Notice. Attend to myself. Bow in gratitude to how consequences show up to remind me what life and love need. Breathe. Sit. Become still, again. Remember that these slips are here to remind me that while there is grace, there is also hubris. And, enjoy the picture show that is this apprenticeship!
