TODAY'S MEDITATION

I read somewhere that patience is passive waiting; it’s active knowing.

This morning I watched a short video of Muhammad Ali. He was running, and talking about how much to run, to really train. And the amount of running was to run until your body hurt, every part of it, beyond endurance. And then to know that this was only half way.

I reminded a client this morning, that the heart ache he’s feeling —and the standing in the face of this heartache— is the “burn” of his nervous system, the workout that tells him he’s in the right place.

There is “there.” There is only the endless preparation, endless and daily and dedicated practice. The training. To be ready to receive.

Receive what? All of it. Everything She brings to me. Everything she brings to me.

I can imagine. And I do. I can want. And I do. But what she truly gives me, these are, in my experience, unimaginable. Hence the practice.

Everything I want is here. I can feel it. But how rarely do I allow myself to fully trust this unreasonable knowing? All too rarely. Only in these moments when I feel myself as the husbandman, loving every instance & interval in her dance, her wild unfolding.

So, let’s take a moment to consider the wild, and how it is one of the most patient of places and experiences.

“Wild” is often used to describe something out of control. Disturbed. Noisy. Dangerous. Uncivilized.

But when I sit in the wild —the forest, the oceanside, by a river— there is little disturbance. Mostly there is silence. Mostly, an experience of resting awareness. The wild, for me, is very similar to the experience of meditation. Which is one of the reasons I choose to meditate in the forest as much as I do: I feel my vibration tuning to the trees…

When, however, I try to force the wild to do my bidding —whether that means chasing an animal, caging a bird, savaging a forest with my chainsaw (hardly a “civilized” activity!), etc— then experience the wild in trauma.

And maybe what we think of “wild” is actually the wild in trauma.

I am the husbandman of this life I create. Not just in my garden, where I create structures within which the wild of the bulb, the tree, the seed expresses itself. In my garden, as in my life, I am knowing that my most powerful and deepest expression as the husbandman is to allow. To feel the impulse to force, and breathe. Repent for my untalented forcing of the past through artful allowing in the present. I am more content now to patiently know that beauty and love flow more easily with my gentle guidance, not my forceful willing.

TODAY’S INSPIRATIONS

🌀 Our prayer is that you produce persistence without insistence to arrive at your goals with the least resistance; that you tack against the headwinds of time and angle when they’re against you without complaint; that you remain present in chaos and calm, and make a difference in this life of miracles that you’ve earned. (Guru Singh & Guruperkarma Kaur)

🌀Your patience, please. (My beloved, my Oracle & my Siren)

TODAY'S SUGGESTED PRACTICE

Day 7 of this month's practice, take 1 minute today to sit and listen to, or chant, the deep Aum (Om) mantra... The “universal sound”…

Please read through first, then ...

• Today, sit (or stand) in stillness as you listen and chant, or simply listen to this mantra, let this question stir within you…. Where is the “wild” resting, alert to moments of beautiful expression, in my body? Where and how am I forcing this wild energy to be and do what feels awkward and unnatural? Notice, and breathe.

• Begin by closing your eyes and aligning your body into its truest, most elegant posture, tucking your chin to lift your heart, tilting your pelvis to straighten your spine. Become still, more still than you've ever been. Your alignment is the physical training for trustworthiness. Bring your hands to your heart, right (masculine) over left (feminine).

• Focus on feeling the vibration. That is all.

• Set your timer for 1 minutes or listen to the mantra sung by Sad Guru here: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxyG7B0jR_kH8VHLIUixJH6bABoGRAFBKu (I recommend setting your timer for 11 minutes and having this on repeat).

• As the timer signals or the mantra ends allow your eyes to slowly open. Take three, relaxed breath cycles, no pressing, no effort, and feel yourself full, without thoughts, open. Safe to receive. Then, step into your day, letting the mantra echo as a nourishing vibration whenever you become still. You don't need to DO anything. Let the world come to you with its demands, its complaints, and yes, its endless tide of gifts and blessings.
